PLEASE NOTE: the student applying for this scholarship will be the primary contact for all inquiries related to the scholarship application and any awards. The student's work ethic is an essential criteria considered by our scholarship judges. If the judging committee has reason to believe the application was completed by a parent or anyone other than the student listed on the application, that student’s name may be removed from consideration.
The NGEMC Chairman’s’ Memorial Scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship awarded to one high school senior in each of the seven counties served by NGEMC.
Washington Youth Tour is a leadership trip sponsored by North Georgia EMC and other electric cooperatives across the nation. It is designed to teach students about U.S. history, the role of democracy, the importance of community and public service and the need for civic leadership.
Guidelines and Eligibility Requirements
This application can be used to apply for both the NGEMC Chairman’s Memorial Scholarship and the Washington Youth Tour. You will be asked to select which program(s) you are applying for at the bottom of this page. Graduating seniors are eligible for both programs, while juniors are eligible for the Washington Youth Tour. See below for full eligibility requirements of each program.
NGEMC Chairman’s Memorial Scholarship eligibility
The scholarship is a one-time, $2,500 award with funds paid by NGEMC in the form of a check to the accredited college, university, or technical school attended by the recipient. One high school senior from each of the seven counties served by NGEMC will be selected. The recipient must be officially enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school at the time of issuance.
The qualified recipient:
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Must be a graduating high school senior.
- Must reside in a household with electricity served by NGEMC.
- Must be enrolled in a full-time, accredited high school program.
- Must be accepted by an accredited 2 or 4-year technical school, college, or university. (If the student is not yet accepted, this information will be required at the time the scholarship is awarded.)
- Must fully complete the NGEMC Chairman’s Memorial Scholarship application and submit supporting documentation by Jan. 17, 2025.
Judging:
Scholarship applications will be judged on the following criteria:
- Academic and scholastic achievement
- School/community involvement, work ethic, and leadership roles
- Essay responses
Washington Youth Tour eligibility
If you are a high school junior or senior, you could represent North Georgia EMC on an all-expense-paid trip to our nation’s capital! North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (NGEMC) will send up to two Youth Tour delegates to travel to Washington, D.C. on June 13-20. If you are chosen by the selection committee to represent NGEMC, you will join approximately 100 delegates from other Georgia electric membership co-ops to:
- Meet your senators, representatives and other leaders.
- Tour historical landmarks.
- Grow leadership skills and lifelong friendships.
- Learn the importance of electric cooperatives to the history and progress of our nation.
The qualified applicant must:
- Reside in a household with electricity provided by NGEMC.
- Be a junior or senior in high school to apply.
- Be at least 16 years of age by the first day of the trip.
- Commit to making the trip, if selected.
- Complete the entry application below.
- Submit all supporting material by the closing date of the application.
Judging:
Washington Youth Tour finalists will be selected for interviews and judged on the following criteria:
- Academic and scholastic achievement
- School/community involvement and leadership roles
- Essay responses
- Interview
Announcement and awards recognition:
All applicants will receive a decision letter; recipients will be announced in the spring. Certificates will be presented to each recipient during that school’s scheduled awards ceremony, usually in May.

Gather Your Information:
Important note: This application will take approximately one hour to complete. There is no option to save and return to your work, so please plan to finish the entire application in one session. Prepare to finish the entire application by gathering your academic, community service, personal information, name and email address of your guidance counselor (used to request your transcripts), and answers to the essay questions below (limit responses to 500 words each).
It is recommended that you type and save your essay answers in a text document such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs before beginning this document to streamline the application process.
Essay Questions:
- Essay question 1: Explain the difference between an electric cooperative and a for-profit electric company and how it affects electric customers, including your family.
- Essay question 2: Please describe a typical week in your life.
- Essay question 3: (To be answered only if you wish to apply to our Washington Youth Tour program): Why would your leadership skills make you an ideal delegate if chosen for the Washington Youth Tour?
Supporting Documentation:
Supporting documentation is due by the close of the application period. Instructions on uploading these documents will be emailed to you after you complete the application.
- High school transcript from your counselor's office. (Please have the email address of your counselor on hand for this application. NGEMC will use this information to automatically generate a transcript request to your school.)
- FOR NGEMC CHAIRMAN'S SCHOLARSHIP: College acceptance letter or other evidence to confirm admission to a college or technical school. (If you are not yet accepted, this information will be required at the time the scholarship is awarded.)
The above documents must be submitted prior to the Jan. 17, 2025 deadline. To maintain fairness, incomplete applications will not be accepted or reviewed.
